SCRANTON, LACKWANNA CO. (WOLF) — Lackawanna County officials have declared a local state of emergency in response to dangerous conditions caused by a powerful winter storm impacting the region.
According to county officials, the declaration was authorized by the Board of Commissioners and signed by the county’s Chief of Staff on Sunday, Jan. 25, 2026. The emergency declaration cites hazardous weather conditions, including heavy snow, ice accumulation, and strong winds, that pose a threat to public safety and property across the county.
As part of the emergency measures, county leaders have ordered the closure of all non-essential Lackawanna County buildings on Monday, Jan. 26. This includes all county government offices and court facilities.
The declaration also grants county emergency management officials expanded authority to coordinate response efforts, deploy resources, and take actions necessary to protect residents and restore essential services during the storm.
Officials urge residents to avoid unnecessary travel and to monitor local updates as winter weather conditions continue to evolve.
