NORTH WHITEHALL TOWNSHIP, Pa. – A man wounded during an officer-involved shooting following a standoff in North Whitehall Township has died, according to the Lehigh County Coroner.
The man, identified as John Doe for investigative and privacy purposes, was treated at the scene by emergency medical personnel and transported to Lehigh Valley Hospital–Cedar Crest, according to officials.
The coroner says Doe, 27, was pronounced dead later that evening at 6:50 p.m. on Saturday, January 24. The coroner reports Doe died from gunshot injuries sustained during the officer-involved shooting.
Authorities say an autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday to determine the official cause and manner of death. The man’s family has been notified, though his name will not be released at this time.
Troopers from PSP Bethlehem were dispatched at approximately 11:03 a.m. Saturday to the 2800 block of Rockdale Road for a reported disturbance involving an armed man. Troopers found a 27-year-old man seated inside a vehicle parked in a driveway with a handgun.
Police established a perimeter and attempted to negotiate a peaceful resolution. During the standoff, the man fired his weapon multiple times and pointed it at troopers, according to authorities.
Police say the man again fired his weapon and was shot by an official. He was treated at the scene and transported to the hospital.
The incident is being investigated by the coroner as well as Lehigh County Homicide Task Force and the Lehigh County DA’s Office.
