A blizzard blanketed the area with snow Sunday and will likely pause the action in the Lackawanna League boys basketball.

Several scheduled games Monday have been postponed.

When play resumes, the action will heat up as teams make their pushes for division championships. Teams are also jockeying for position in the District 2 playoffs. This year’s district finals are scheduled for Feb. 26 through Feb. 28 at Mohegan Arena at Casey Plaza.

Wallenpaupack at West Scranton and Valley View at North Pocono were both pushed to Tuesday in Division I games. Dunmore is at Western Wayne on Tuesday at 7:15 p.m. Honesdale at Lakeland is now Saturday at 4 p.m.

Abington Heights (.691) leads the District 2 Class 5A power rating standings. The Comets are the defending champions. Crestwood (12-6, .621) is second.  The top two teams earn byes into the semifinals.

Division II

There is an intense race for the Division II title.

Dunmore (15-1, 8-0), Riverside (7-1, 15-1) and Old Forge (11-4, 6-2) had memorable meetings in the first half of the season. The much-anticipated rematches are ahead.

Dunmore’s balanced scoring attack helped it push past Riverside and Old Forge. Brayden Canavan, whose buzzer-beating 3-pointer to edge Old Forge was seen across the country as ESPN SportsCenter’s Play of the Day, is averaging 19.2 points for the Bucks. Carter Sload averages 17.4 points, Jimmy Clark contributes 13.7 and Nate Aviles averages 10.6.

Riverside also has a prolific offense. Nico Antoniacci is leading District 2 in scoring at 31.6 points. Brayden Rose is averaging 19.1 points for the Vikings and has scored 899 points in his career.

Riverside (.759) is slightly ahead of Dunmore (.749) in the District 2 Class 3A power rating standings. The Vikings are aided by their opponents’ winning percentage of .503.

Elk Lake (16-1, .683), the Lackawanna League Division III leader, is in third place in the District 2 Class 3A standings.

With six games remaining, Holy Cross (8-8, .570) is trying to hang onto the No. 4 seed. The Crusaders have games in the second half against Old Forge and Dunmore. Holy Redeemer (11-7, .568) is closing in on fourth place, which would earn a home game in the district quarterfinals.

Old Forge (.667) leads the District 2 Class 2A standings. The Blue Devils’ two losses in the Lackawanna League came against Dunmore and Riverside. Both games were on the road, with the rematches at the Devils’ Den.

Cameron Parker averages 16.6 points and Logan Fanning averages 15.8 points for Old Forge. Parker has 945 career points.

Division III

Elk Lake continues to dominate in Division III.

The Warriors have won 22 of 23 league games over the last two seasons. Elk Lake got ahead of the storm and played Carbondale Area on Saturday. The team earned coach John Warnero his 200th career victory.

In his second stint with Elk Lake, Warnero has built the program back to a championship level. Warnero resigned following the 2015-16 season, citing additional work responsibilities and family commitments. He led the Warriors to five division titles and a record of 161-82 in 10 seasons before stepping down.

Susquehanna (12-4, 7-1) and Lackawanna Trail (11-4, 6-2) are challenging the Warriors for the Division III crown. Both teams are also chasing Old Forge in the District 2 Class 2A power rating standings.

Only the No. 1 seed receives a bye in the District 2 Class 2A quarterfinals.

Lackawanna Trail (.572) is second and Susquehanna (.560) is third. Susquehanna does have a head-to-head win over the Lions.

Susquehanna’s Griffin Fisk leads Division III in scoring at 20.7 points and teammate Mason Keyes ranks fourth at 16.1 points.

Blue Ridge’s Paxton Pingarelli averages 18.3 points this season.
