Snow is falling across the entire area and will continue much of the day Sunday into Sunday night.

Channel 11 Morning News is starting half-an-hour early to bring you the latest developments on the fallout from Sunday’s heavy snowfall. Tune in to Channel 11 at 4 a.m. as crews work to clear the snow and get things back on track.

Most areas that see all snow will have 8-14 inches by late Sunday evening, with locally higher amounts possible. The areas that see some sleet will see slightly lesser amounts.

UPDATE: 11:45 p.m.

Channel 11 reporters spent the evening learning about what comes next as the snow began to slow down on Sunday.

Frederick Price spoke with a snowplow driver to learn about what has been done so far and how much work is left.

“We got to one lot, go back an hour and a half later and it looks untouched,” driver Joey Mancini said.

UPDATE 10 p.m.

PennDOT says that, due to winter weather conditions, two roads in Harrison Township are closed until further notice:

Burtner Road (Route 1032) between Freeport Road and Route 28

Pleasantville Road (Route 1027) between Carlisle Street and Burtner Road

The latest look at I-279 in Allegheny County shows the road still mostly covered in snow after a historic snowfall. Take a look.

UPDATE 9:00 p.m.

UPMC released a statement about its plans for operations after Sunday’s historic snowfall. Here’s their message to anyone who may be concerned about their appointment or procedure on Monday:

“All UPMC hospitals and emergency departments have continued to operate without interruption throughout the weekend, thanks to the dedication of our staff.

“Patients scheduled for procedures or office visits on Monday should confirm their appointments before traveling. For patients who may not have already heard from their physician’s office, please call or message the provider to verify the appointment or discuss options if they feel unsafe traveling.

“Most offices will be open as usual, and many can offer later appointments, telemedicine visits, or can reschedule for later in the week.

As always, if anyone is experiencing a medical emergency, they should call 911 immediately,” a UPMC spokesperson said.

UPDATE 8:45 p.m.

Channel 11’s Cara Sapida spoke with Washington County Mayor JoJo Burgess to learn about the area’s response to Sunday’s heavy snowfall.

“I’ve been out since early this morning, and they’re doing a phenomenal job trying to keep up with this snow,” said Mayor JoJo Burgess.

UPDATE 8 p.m.

Channel 11’s Gabriella caught up with Pittsburgh Mayor Corey O’Connor to get an update on Sunday’s snow-clearing efforts.

This was the first big snow response test for O’Connor and his administration.

Pittsburgh Regional Transit’s ACCESS paratransit trips are canceled on Monday, officials say. ACCESS has started notifying riders who have trips scheduled.

This comes after PRT announced it was suspending all bus and rail services until Monday due to the winter storm.

Channel 11’s Addison Albert spoke with hotel guests who are stuck at the Hampton Inn in North Huntingdon Township because of the snow.

They said they attended a wedding the night before.

UPDATE 5:30 p.m.

Pittsburgh Regional Transit announced it is suspending all bus and rail services through Sunday.

A PRT spokesperson said the suspension is effective immediately and that operations are expected to resume on Monday morning.

“Our operators deserve to be commended for doing their best under very challenging conditions, but the situation has deteriorated to the point where continuing service could put both our operators and riders at risk,” said PRT CEO Katharine Kelleman. “With several buses already stuck in the snow, we must err on the side of caution and safety.”

Multiple municipalities in Allegheny County have declared a state of emergency as the region experiences heavy snowfall.

The county currently has 16 disaster declarations, including 20 municipalities, according to Kasey Reigner, Department of Emergency Services public information officer.

Channel 11 crews observed a vehicle left off the side of I-279 in Allegheny County.

The latest update from Pittsburgh Regional Transit says that all routes are currently experiencing at least an hour-long delay.

PRT said the following routes are impacted:

6-Spring Hill, 15-Charles, and 17-Shadeland are unable to serve parts of the North Side.

39-Brookline is unable to serve parts of Brookline

44-Knoxville is unable to serve parts of Mount Oliver

54-Northside-Oakland is unable to serve Bon Air

57-Hazelwood is unable to serve Blair Street in Hazelwood

59-Mon Valley is unable to serve Mon View Heights in Whitaker or between Duquesne and Whitaker.

61A-North Braddock, 61B-Braddock, and P68-Braddock Hills Flyer are unable to serve the Braddock Hills Shopping Center

67-Monroeville will stay on William Penn Highway. Buses are unable to serve UPMC East or Monroeville Mall.

74 Homewood-Squirrel Hill is unable to serve Highland Drive and the upper part of Homewood/Belmar Gardens

77-Penn Hills is unable to serve Alcoma Apartments in Penn Hills

79-East Hills is unable to serve East Hills

81-Oak Hill and 83-Webster are unable to serve parts of the Hill District

P68 Braddock Hills Flyer are unable to serve the Monroeville Mall, which is closed, or the Braddock Hills Shopping Center.

A new “Super Plow” is helping keep the PA Turnpike clear of snow amid the major winter storm.

It’s the first big storm for the 550-horsepower tri-drive truck with three rear axles, a Turnpike spokesperson says.

The Turnpike’s Director of Maintenance rode as a passenger in the Super Plow, sharing video of the truck in action around Somerset.

Pittsburgh’s Chief Meteorologist Stephen Cropper has shared his latest weather forecast. He estimates that there are still several inches of snow on the way for most areas Sunday. He also expected temperatures to drop into the negatives overnight.

UPDATE 3:05 p.m.

The Allegheny County Sheriff’s Office said public functions will be unavailable on Monday.

Those services include real estate, civil process and firearms.

More than 150 volunteers with the City of Pittsburgh’s Snow Angels program have been out clearing their neighbors’ sidewalks, according to Mayor Corey O’Connor, who was also helping.

Pizza Parma is offering free pizza to all public workers, emergency responders, first responders, bus drivers and anyone affiliated with the City of Pittsburgh who is working during this storm at either one of the restaurant’s locations.

Giant Eagle announced that they will be closing all of its corporate Giant Eagle and Market District locations early Sunday due to winter weather conditions.

The Mayor of Ambridge said the borough continues to actively work to clear the streets. Mayor Iorfido-Schmidt is asking everyone to stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary.

Many flights at Pittsburgh International Airport have been canceled.

The airport is recommending checking directly with your airline for the most up-to-date information on delays or cancellations if you’re traveling today or tomorrow.

PRT provided an update, saying all service is currently experiencing up to 60-minute delays due to road conditions.

Buses are unable to serve parts of Penn Hills (Alcoma Apartments), Fineview, the Hill District, Garfield, Duquesne, the North Side, and Braddock Hills.

UPDATE 9:30 a.m.:

As snow continues to fall, the impact is being seen on Pittsburgh area highways.

Our crews encountered I-79 near the Wexford exit as being snow-packed around 9 a.m.

UPDATE 8:40 a.m.:

Scott Township has issued a Declaration of Emergency.

According to a letter from the township, the declaration allows them to take immediate action to protect the health, safety and welfare of residents. It enables local officials and emergency services to more efficiently respond to conditions, coordinate resources and implement any necessary measures to address the situation.

They are asking residents to remain alert, follow guidelines from local officials and avoid unnecessary travel.

Channel 11’s Andrew Havranek has an update on the conditions in North Huntingdon, Westmoreland County.

UPDATE 7:20 a.m.:

Mt Lebanon said that they have their full crew of plows out, but to expect snow on your route if you must be on the roads.

UPDATE 7:10 a.m.:

Pittsburgh Regional Transit said that they are seeing systemwide delays of about 30 minutes. They added that road conditions are preventing them from serving some communities in the North Side, Penn Hills, and Braddock Hills.

The Rochester Borough Police Department in Beaver County is urging residents to avoid travel and not drive unless absolutely necessary.

UPDATE 6:15 a.m.:

Melissa Maczko, spokesperson for PennDOT District 12, said that their crews will remain on the roads through the storm and and after for cleanup.

She added that drivers should expect to see snow-covered conditions as it continues to fall.

“A snow route could take anywhere from two hours to several hours depending on the storm’s intensity,” Maczko said.

She said that District 12, which covers Washington, Westmoreland, Greene and Fayette counties, has 200 snow plow routes. All available staffing is working.
