A male died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in an Exeter Township residence Sunday afternoon as police and crisis negotiators arrived to try to help him, Exeter police said.

Exeter police were dispatched shortly after 2:30 p.m. to Longview Drive for a report of a male armed with a weapon and threatening self-harm, police said.

Officers responded and coordinated with Berks County mental health personnel and trained crisis negotiators. Responders attempted to de-escalate the situation and provide assistance to the individual.

Shortly after police and negotiators arrived on scene, the male, whose identity is being withheld at this time, suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Officers and EMS immediately attempted to render medical aid.

The male was pronounced dead at the scene. No other injuries were reported, and there is no threat to the public.
