ICE (Immigration & Customs Enforcement) behavior in Minneapolis has sparked protests and debate across the country- including in Pennsylvania.

Over the weekend, protestors rallied outside a Gov. Josh Shapiro book signing event in Philadelphia. The group criticized how Pennsylvania state law enforcement interacts with ICE. They called for the commonwealth to stop giving federal access to state databases, among other demands.

Will Simmons, a spokesperson for the governor’s office, said the office has done a full review of how Commonwealth agencies interact with ICE.

“Outside agencies do not have unfettered access to state databases. As it has for years, PSP may share information with federal, local, and other state law enforcement agencies when necessary during the course of a criminal investigation,” Simmons said in an email statement. “There are legitimate investigations that involve foreign nationals who have committed crimes in PA or elsewhere that would require immigration enforcement agencies to seek access to information contained in Commonwealth-run databases.”

Shapiro’s official X account has made multiple posts criticizing ICE officer behavior in Minneapolis. Recent ones focusing on how ICE agents where masks.
