OBITUARY
Kenneth John Halfpenny, 59, of Gaithersburg, MD, passed away peacefully at his home on January 21, 2026.
Born on March 3, 1966 in Scranton to Mr. And Mrs. John (Jack) and Stella Halfpenny, Ken was a 1984 graduate of Scranton Preparatory School and a 1988 graduate of the University of Scranton, where he graduated magna cum laude with a degree in computer science and software engineering.
After college, Ken moved to Maryland, where he had a long and successful career as a software engineer.
Ken was a beloved son, brother, and uncle known for his generosity and good humor. He was an avid comic book collector who enjoyed traveling the country to various comic conventions. He was an amateur songwriter who relished crafting a comedic tune in the style of his idol Weird Al Yankovic. He always looked forward to his frequent trips home to Scranton to spend time with family.
Ken is survived by his mother, Stella Halfpenny, of South Scranton, sister Michelle Granahan of South Scranton; a brother, John Halfpenny, Jr and wife Kelly Halfpenny of Taylor; a niece, Abigail Backes of South Scranton; nephew, Corey Halfpenny and wife Natalie Halfpenny of Old Forge; and nephew Bill Halfpenny and wife Rose Farrell of South Hadley, MA. Ken is also survived by aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Ken was predeceased by his father, John (Jack) Halfpenny, Sr.
The funeral will be Thursday, with Mass held at 10 a.m. in Sacred Hearts Church, St. Teresa of Calcutta Parish, 1217 Prospect Avenue, Scranton.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Kens honor to the Johns Hopkins Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center or St. Jude Childrens Hospital. Local arrangements by the Nicholas Chomko Funeral Home, South Scranton.
