Mike McCarthy and the Pittsburgh Steelers are building out their coaching staff. They could soon add an assistant from an AFC North rival who, much like the new head coach, is very familiar with the Steel City.

“#Browns special teams coordinator Bubba Ventrone has received a requests from the #Steelers for coordinator spot,” Cleveland.com Browns beat writer Mary Kay Cabot wrote Wednesday on X. “#Rams, too, which @TomPelissero had 1st. The latter seems more likely”

Ventrone, a Pittsburgh native and graduate of Chartiers Valley High School, re-joined the Browns in 2023 after having played for them from 2009-12. Ventrone also played for the New England Patriots (2007-08) and San Francisco 49ers (2013-14). He totaled 64 tackles during his playing career and appeared in 97 games.

Under Ventrone’s direction, Dustin Hopkins set a single-season team record with 33 field goals in 2023. His eight field goal makes from at least 50 yards out were the most in one campaign in the Browns’ history, as well. With 123 points, Hopkins notched the second-highest output in a single go-round in team lore, behind only Jim Brown’s 126 in 1965.

The same season, punter Corey Bojorquez set a franchise high-water mark with a 49.4-yard punt average. His 31 punts inside the 20-yard line marked the second-most in Cleveland history. In 2024, Bojorquez paced the league in punts inside the 10-yard line (16).

Ventrone has also served as a special teams assistant coach on Bill Belichick’s Patriots staff (2015-17) and as special teams coordinator for the Indianapolis Colts (2018-22).
