(WTAJ) — Natural gas company UGI is requesting to raise its rates with the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC).
UGI said in its proposal that the increase of $99.4 million annually would recover its investment in system upgrades and maintain safe and reliable natural gas service.
What would this increase, if approved, mean for UGI customers?
If approved, the average monthly bill for customers would increase between 6.3% and 8.7% as follows:
A residential heating customer using 68.7 ccf per month would increase from $113.64 to $123.55 per month, or by 8.7%.
A commercial heating customer using 26.8 mcf per month would increase from $336.74 to $358.17 per month, or by 6.4%.
An industrial customer using 54.6 mcf per month would increase from $647.57 to $688.65 per month, or by 6.3%.
Customers should note that the estimated increases apply to those who purchase natural gas directly from UGI. Customers using an alternate supplier may see different impacts on their bills.
UGI’s filing includes over $468 million in investments that include critical safety improvements to its distribution system and upgrades to its facilities and information technology, the company said.
The company is asking the PUC to approve the rates to take effect on March 29, however, the PUC typically suspends the requested dates while it investigates and holds public hearings on the proposed increases.
UGI will continue its donation, which is not part of the rate increase, to help support customers in need, they added. Over the next three years, the company pledged $1 million annually to its “Operation Share Energy Fund,” which assists qualifying low and moderate-income customers. The fund grants up to $600 to eligible customers to help pay their heating bills.
