Cheyenne’s controversial administrative warrant ordinance is back on hold after the City Council unanimously voted to delay a third reading until Feb. 9.

The move follows renewed public concerns about municipal court oversight and conflicts of interest.

If approved, the measure would allow municipal judges to issue inspection warrants for health, safety and building code cases when property owners deny access or notice could interfere with enforcement.

“I am going to be a ‘yes’ vote to postpone this tonight. We have two substitutes that have been submitted for this ordinance during the last week,” Dr. Michelle Aldrich, Ward III Council member, said. “There’s a third one as well. I think that we really need more time to have the conversation. I look forward to working with you over the next two weeks, so that we can get something that might be agreeable and have the protections that you see as being necessary.”

The ordinance now heads back to the council’s Public Services Committee for revisions.
