William Joseph Bennie

OBITUARY

William Joseph Bennie, 75, of Hockessin, Delaware, formerly of Scranton, Pennsylvania, passed away on January 21, 2026.

Bill was, above all else, a family manstrong, passionate, and gentle. Whether gathered for holidays, milestones, family reunions, pool parties or an ordinary Sunday afternoon, he found his greatest joy in being surrounded by the family he loved. His devotion to his wife, children, and grandchildren was the defining thread of his life.

He spent 42 years with Frito-Lay in sales, building relationships across NEPA with the same warmth he brought to everything he did. He was also a tax accountant, a business he took over from his Uncle Ken, and was known for going the extra mileoften literallyto deliver personalized service to his clients. His work ethic was unrivaled.

Bill was a devoted fan of the New York Giants, Boston Celtics, and New York Yankees, and a reluctant Phillies fan upon his retirement to Delaware. He treasured the games he attended over the years with his childrenthough he would be the first to tell you it was never really about the score or who played. It was about the company.

In quieter moments, Bill could be found on the porch with Donna, listening to jazz, blues, or classic rock. He had a love for old movies and would stay up into the wee hours watching black-and-white films. Bill was a student of world history and devoted to his pets. He inherited a spirit of adventure from his parents, Peg and Clint. When his children were young, his family of 7 would squeeze into one vehicle for camping vacations in New Jersey or Upstate New York. Later in life, he preferred more exotic destinations, and loved nothing more than cruising with Donna, Mary Ellen, and Joe.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Margaret ‘Peg’ and Clinton Bennie.

He is survived by his wife, Donna Lee Bennie; their children, Andrea Abban (Andrew), Robert F. McDonough, Meghan McDonough (Robert), Craig M. Bennie (Palma), and Bryan D. Bennie (Lindsey); his seven grandchildren, Kyle, Olivia, Autumn, Lincoln, Taylor, Sydney, and Anna; and his sisters, Mary Ellen Stezar and Margaret Kelly.

A celebration of life will be held in May.
