The Pittsburgh Steelers lost out on former Browns special teams coach Bubba Ventrone, who was set to interview with the team. He is reportedly going to join Sean McVay’s staff and become their special teams coach after not being retained by new Browns head coach Todd Monken.
Ventrone is from Pittsburgh and an alumni of Chartiers Valley. He played defensive back at Villanova and after being an undrafred free agent in the 2005 NFL Draft, he spent over a decade in the NFL.
Over that time, Ventrone spent time with the Patriots and the Jets, while finishing his career off with the San Francisco 49ers. His most storied time in the NFL was with the Cleveland Browns from 2009 to 2012.
Ventrone started his coaching career under Bill Belichick in New England as a special teams assistant. This past year, the Browns were the worst special teams group in the NFL by many measures. With the Colts in 2018 to 2022, he made some of the best special teams units in the entire NFL before joining the Browns in 2023.
Ventrone, 43, is a hot shot up-and-coming mind, but the Steelers have to find a new special teams coach after Danny Smith was hired by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
