Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Kris Letang is expected to miss at least four weeks because of a broken foot, the team announced Saturday morning.
The Penguins placed him on IR.
It’s unclear how Letang got hurt. He played in Thursday’s win over Chicago, then did not practice Friday, when the Penguins said they would have an update on his status on Saturday.
The timing means Letang will miss fewer games than normal in a four-week span, as the NHL is shutting down for the majority of February for the Winter Olympics. The team plays only five games in the next four weeks, including an afternoon home date Saturday against the New York Rangers.
Letang, 38 and one of the team’s longtime core veterans, has three goals, 22 points in 50 games this season.
Like Letang, veteran center Evgeni Malkin missed practice Friday with a promised update coming Saturday. Presumably, that update will come closer to game time.
