Nate Schimelfenig scored 40 points and West Scranton withstood a 34-point outburst by Delaware Valley in the fourth quarter to upset the host Warriors, 73-66, in a Lackawanna League Division I boys basketball game Saturday.
The Invaders led after three quarters, 50-32, and repelled Delaware Valley’s comeback bid by going 17 for 28 from the foul line in the fourth quarter. They were 32 for 43 for the game.
Schimelfenig had seven field goals, five of which were 3-pointers, and was 21 for 27 from the foul line, including 8 for 14 in the fourth quarter. He had 14 points after the first quarter and 28 points at halftime.
Jahmair Rivera added 17 points for West Scranton (6-11 overall, 3-7 league), including 9 of 14 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter.
Trey Newton led the No. 8 Warriors (10-8, 3-7) with 24 points, 15 of which came in the fourth quarter. Tyler Lombardo had 15 points and Harrison Bixby contributed 11 points — all of which came in the fourth.
Abington Heights 75, Scranton 54: At Scranton, Jordan Shaffer scored 21 points and Andrew Kettel had 20 points to lead No. 3 Abington Heights over Scranton in a Lackawanna Division I game.
Kettel hit four 3-pointers and had 15 points in the first half as the Comets (13-5, 10-0) took a 41-30 halftime lead. Shaffer then had 14 points in the second half, enabling Abington Heights to complete the win.
Justin Mayers led the Knights (3-6, 6-11) with 16 points. Tony Battaglia followed with 15, 12 of which came in the first half.
Dunmore 88, Western Wayne 50: At Western Wayne, four Bucks scored in double figures, with Nate Aviles totaling 23 points, and Bradyden Canavan had 20 in a Division II win that moved them into a first-place tie with Riverside.
Top-ranked Dunmore (16-2, 9-1) erupted for 32 points in the third quarter. Jimmy Clark scored all 11 of his points in the outburst. Carter Sload, who finished with 19 points, added eight and Aviles had seven in the surge.
Jacob Lawlor led Western Wayne (3-15, 0-10) with 13 points.
Lakeland 73, Honesdale 61: At Lakeland, Chase Rosenkrans scored 21 points to lead the Chiefs past Honesdale in a Lackawanna Division II game.
David Naniewicz added 15 points, while Jake McHale and Cole Tonkin had 11 points apiece for Lakeland (8-10, 3-7), which built a 15-point halftime lead.
Gavin Briggs had 21 points and Levi Martin followed with 17 for the Hornets (7-11, 3-7).
Girls
At Honesdale, Lily Murray helped the home team start fast as the No. 7 Lady Hornets defeated Lakeland, 50-37, in a Lackawanna League Division II girls basketball game Saturday.
Murray scored eight of her team-high 13 points in the first quarter as Honesdale took a 19-6 lead. Karsyn Kromko had five points in the quarter and finished with 12 points.
Ruby Martin chipped in 11 points for the Lady Hornets (15-3, 9-1).
Kamri Naniewicz led the Lady Chiefs (6-12, 2-8) with 11 points. Natalie Rude followed with 10 points.
Elk Lake 61, Carbondale Area 29: At Carbondale Area, Madisyn Casselbury scored 23 points to lead Elk Lake to a Lackawanna Division III victory.
Casselbury had nine of her points in the second quarter when the Lady Warriors outscored Carbondale Area, 24-9, to build a 16-point halftime lead.
Laci Ayotte and Kendyl Weisgold each added 10 points for Elk Lake (11-6, 7-3).
Maureen Newcomb led the Chargerettes (2-16, 0-10) with 10 points.
