Lackawanna County’s best swimmers will form teams for championship-level relays in one of the premier postseason events.
Scranton Prep hosts the 24th annual Classic Gold Relay Invitational on Sunday at noon at the University of Scranton. Teams participating include Scranton Prep, Abington Heights, Delaware Valley, Holy Cross, Lake-Lehman and Tunkhannock.
Featured races include the 200-yard free, 400 medley, 200 backstroke relay, 800 free relay, 200 breaststroke relay, 400 individual medley relay, 200 butterfly relay, 500 crescendo freestyle relay, the 200 medley, 400 free relay, and the 250 mixed freestyle relay.
Last season, the Abington Heights Lady Comets edged Delaware Valley for the girls’ championship. Tunkhannock and Delaware Valley shared the boys’ championship.
Scranton Prep won six relay events in the girls’ meet. Tunkhannock won five races and set three meet records in its team win.
Several of the standout performers from last season’s meet return in 2026. Rebecca Oakes, last season’s Times-Tribune Female Swimmer of the Year; Galko; Eva Kaszuba; Ella Schofield; Myla Kopa; and Anna Millett were part of championship relay teams in last year’s meet.
Abington Heights returns gold-medal winners Hadley Pallman, Gianna Vachino, Katie Giermanski, Kacey Johnson, Audra Wimmer, and Ella Bannon.
The Tunkhannock boys’ team also returns several swimmers who contributed to last season’s title. Aidan Mislevy, Jaden Baltrusaitis, Brayden Christopher, and Kyle Kozloski helped set a meet record in the 200 free relay, the 500 Crescendo Relay, and the 400 free relay last season.
That group of Tigers won the 400 free relay in a record time of 3:18.37 at the Ernie Shartle Invitational.
Both Tunkhannock and Delaware Valley should receive a strong challenge from Abington Heights. The Comets have a deep roster of talent.
At the Ernie Shartle Invitational, Jason Casper, Derek Williams, Charles Voytek, and Geoff Stanton won the 200 medley relay in a meet record time of 1:39.02. Williams, Stanton, and Casper teamed with Judah Donnelly to set a meet record in the 200 free relay in 1:29.23.
