Troy Rivetti has returned to the role of acting United States Attorney for Western Pennsylvania.
Pending confirmation by the U.S. Senate, Rivetti was appointed Wednesday by Attorney General Pamela Bondi and was sworn into the role thereafter by U.S. District Court Judge J. Nicholas Ranjan.
Rivetti has led the office since the resignation of Eric Olshan in January 2025, with Rivetti served as Acting United States Attorney until November 2025 and then continuing to lead the office in his old role as First Assistant United States Attorney.
The Justice Department said Rivetti’s career there has spanned nearly 30 years, including previous roles as chief of the office’s Criminal Division from 2019 to 2021.
The department said Rivetti’s primary area of concentration has involved the investigation and prosecution of violent crime, including large-scale drug trafficking organizations and firearms offenses.
In March 2023, Rivetti and Indiana County officials announced that a major investigation into drug activity that began in Indiana and stretched across the United States and Mexico has resulted in two indictments.
Rivetti said 57 defendants were charged as a result of “Operation Lake Effect,” including seven from Indiana, two from Creekside, and others from Vandergrift, Leechburg, New Kensington, Arnold and Tarentum.
Elsewhere in the region, Rivetti co-led the multi-year investigation and prosecution of United States v. Robert Bowers, the perpetrator of the worst antisemitic mass shooting in U.S. history, the Oct. 27, 2018, massacre at the Tree Of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh’s Squirrel Hill neighborhood.
Rivetti served as first chair for the trial team throughout the three-month capital jury selection, trial, and sentencing.
Rivetti obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree from Dickinson College and his Juris Doctor from Georgetown University. Following graduation from law school, Rivetti was employed for five years as a litigation associate at a large Pittsburgh law firm, then served as a law clerk for two years for the Honorable Judge D. Brooks Smith.
