Key deadlines are approaching to vote in an upcoming special election in part of Lehigh County.

Pennsylvania House District 22 covers parts of Allentown and Salisbury townships.

Republican Robert Smith will face Democrat Ana Tiburcio in the special election on Feb. 24.

Eligible voters have until Monday, Feb. 9, to register to vote. To be eligible to vote, a person must be 18 years old, a U.S. citizen for at least 30 days and have lived within the 22nd District for at least 30 days.

The last day to request a mail-in ballot is Feb. 17, and all mail-in ballots must be received by the elections board by 8 p.m. on Feb. 24.

The balance of power in the Pennsylvania House has been razor-thin the last few years. Democrats have held the slimmest of margins.

Ana Tiburcio replaced Democratic candidate Julian Guridy in the election, who had to withdraw over failing to meet residential requirements.

Tiburcio is a three-year member of the Allentown School Board.

Her opponent, Smith, is himself a former member of the Allentown School Board, and a former member of city council in the late ’90s.
