Former Pittsburgh Steelers tight ends coach Alfredo Roberts is joining Aaron Glenn’s staff with the New York Jets in the same position, according to multiple reports. Roberts was not retained by new Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy, though it is not known who his replacement will be just yet.
The Steelers hired Vikings tight ends coach Brian Angelichio to be their new offensive coordinator and he will have some say in coaching the tight ends.
Roberts joins former Steelers defensive line coach Karl Dunbar with the Jets. Glenn fired most of his staff after this season in an attempt to get new voices in the room after a disastrous first season with the Jets.
Roberts joined the Steelers in 2021 and had been their coach ever since. During that time, he oversaw the development of both Pat Freiermuth and Darnell Washington, two players who have turned into legitimately solid NFL tight ends.
Roberts played in the NFL from 1988 to 1993 on the Kansas City Chiefs and Dallas Cowboys before entering the coaching realm in 1999 as Florida Atlantic’s running backs coach. Over the years, he has been the tight ends coach for the Colts, Browns, Jaguars, and Chargers. He even had a stint as the running backs coach with the Chargers from 2017 to 2019.
