New NFL defensive assistant Shawn Howe reacted to joining Mike McCarthy’s Pittsburgh Steelers coaching staff.
Coaches don’t often provide anything but excitement when it comes to their new positions every offseason. Mike McCarthy was so excited in his Pittsburgh Steelers introductory press conference that he began to cry.
There’s little doubt new Steelers assistant Shawn Howe is also excited to be in Pittsburgh next season. But Howe also revealed his bittersweet emotions when it came to his first NFL job.
“I’m extremely excited, and I’m extremely sad to be leaving at the same time,” Howe told Skyline Sports, via Steelers Depot’s Alex Kozora. “It’s the weirdest, weirdest deal in the world.
“You got this huge break and this huge opportunity, and then you can’t help but to look around and be like, ‘Ah, this doesn’t feel great.’ Even though it does. It was a weird feeling.
“But I’m extremely excited, and I’m extremely excited about some of the people I’m getting ready to be able to be around because they’re pretty elite.”
Mike McCarthy Hired Montana State DC Shawn Howe
MontanaSports.com’s Slim Kimmel reported on Wednesday the Steelers added Howe as a defensive position coach. In actuality, his role remains unclear, but he’s an intriguing addition nonetheless.
Howe spent five seasons at Montana State. Over the past two campaigns, he served as the program’s defensive coordinator in some capacity. The Bobcats capped off Howe’s tenure with a FCS national championship.
The role with the Steelers will be his first NFL position.
“It’s time to get uncomfortable again,” Howe added in his interview. “It’s time to grow again. It’s time to move up and move on…
“I’ve always said this, I’m not gonna just leave this place. You’ve probably heard me say this. It’s gonna have to be something special.
“Well, something special came up.”
