The Parkland School District agreed to a $6 million settlement with three former students who were sexually abused by a teacher, according to a news release Wednesday.
The female students were abused by Christian Willman during their time at Parkland from 2005 to 2009, according to their lawsuit filed in Lehigh County Court.
The 46-year-old former Coopersburg resident pleaded guilty in 2020 to abusing four girls at Parkland and two others at the Palisades School District.
Willman groomed and manipulated the victims due to “significant institutional failures by both school districts to protect students or intervene,” according to the news release from the law firm of Laffey, Bucci, D’Andrea, Reich & Ryan of Philadelphia.
That firm represents the three Parkland victims who settled and two victims from the Palisades School District. The Palisades civil cases remain pending in Bucks County Court.
“No student should ever be left vulnerable to a predator within their own school, much less at the hands of a person that was so open and brazen with their abuse,” said attorney Stewart Ryan on behalf of the Parkland victims.
Attorneys for the Parkland and Palisades school districts did not return email messages seeking comment on the Parkland settlement or pending Palisades cases.
Willman worked at Parkland High School from 2001 to 2011 as an industrial arts/ technology education teacher and stage crew/theater supervisor, authorities said. He was an engineering teacher, club adviser and girls soccer coach in the Palisades School District from 2011 to 2018.
He also served as an assistant coach for the Wilson Area and Parkland boys soccer teams, as well as the Northwestern and Palisades girls programs.
The lawsuit filed on behalf of the Parkland victims says Willman frequently signed the victims out of classes and spent inappropriate amounts of time with them during and after school. He was observed with one victim after school in a dark classroom, the lawsuit says. Administrators failed to heed warning signs that could have prevented further abuse, the lawsuit claims.
Willman is serving a six- to 12-year state prison sentence at the State Correctional Institution at Mahanoy.
He pleaded guilty to sexual assault by a sports official, sexual contact with a student, criminal use of a communication facility and criminal solicitation to commit sexual assault by a sports official.
He also pleaded guilty to criminal solicitation to commit sexual contact with a student, manufacturing child pornography and four counts of corruption of minors.
