The University of Scranton men’s basketball team is becoming the cardiac comeback kids.
For the second consecutive Wednesday, the Royals overcame a double-digit halftime deficit to edge Lycoming College, 70-69, in a Landmark Conference game at Lamade Gymnasium in Williamsport.
Last week, Scranton trailed Moravian by as many as 19 points in the first half and by 16 at halftime, but rallied for an 84-80 win.
This week, the Royals were down 17 late in first half and 15 at halftime. But the Royals chipped away at the deficit in the second half. A 9-0 run got them to within 51-48 with 10:34 left. The teams traded scores over the next seven minutes before a 3-pointer by Sammy Tornabene tied the game at 65 with 3:36 left.
Charlie Sims reclaimed the lead for Lycoming with a 3-pointer. Nick Ruisi answered with a tap-in before Isaiah Valentine and Tornabene traded free throws to make it 69-68 with 59 seconds left. Lycoming missed two free throws with 17 seconds left, giving Scranton a chance for the win. Brendan Carr was fouled with two seconds left and sank both free throws to put the Royals in front, 70-69 — their first lead. Ben Robinson then stole the ensuing long inbounds pass to seal the victory.
Tornabene wound up with 27 points for the Royals (18-4 overall, 11-4 league), who remain tied for second in the Landmark standings with Drew. They are one game behind first-place Catholic, which lost Wednesday to Susquehanna. Carr added 12 points and Ruisi finished with a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Marywood 87, Immaculata 79: At Scranton, Marywood University put six players in double figures to stop a three-game losing streak and defeat Immaculata University in an Atlantic East Conference game at Insalaco Arena.
Shilo Bivins had a double-double for the Pacers (12-10, 5-6) with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Michel Loftin also scored 17 points. Noah Perry added 14 points, Collin Himmelberg had 13 points and six assists, Andrew Quinn netted 11 points and Joe Macciocco chipped in 10 points.
With the score tied at 74 and 4:46 left, two Loftin free throws and a 3-pointer by Macciocco gave Marywood a 79-74 lead with 3:47 remaining. The Mighty Macs closed to within 83-79 with 1:08 to play, but two free throws each by Bivins and Himmelberg in the final 22 seconds sealed the Pacers’ fourth straight win over Immaculata.
Women’s basketball
At Scranton, the University of Scranton scored the first 15 points and romped to a 104-29 victory over Lycoming College in a Landmark Conference game Wednesday at the John Long Center. It is the largest margin of victory since 1989 and the fourth-largest in program history.
Elizabeth Bennett scored 20 points to lead the No. 2-ranked Lady Royals (22-0, 15-0). Kaci Kranson added 19 points and Sophia Talutto had 11 points. Katie Gorski contributed nine points and Kaeli Romanowski totaled five points, four rebounds, three assists and seven steals.
Immaculata 89, Marywood 46: At Immaculata, Marywood University fell behind by 20 points in the first quarter and lost to Immaculata University in an Atlantic East Conference game.
Megan Cavoli led the Pacers (11-11, 6-5) with 14 points. Alli Anstadt had seven points and eight rebounds.
