Jiffy Lube and Hoffman’s Car Wash closed in Bethlehem because of unstable ground.
BETHLEHEM, N.Y. (WNYT) — Two businesses in Bethlehem have had to evacuate because of unstable ground.
Bethlehem Town Attorney Jim Potter said the property at 55 Delaware Ave., which is home to Jiffy Lube and Hoffman’s Car Wash, had to be vacated on Sunday.
There has been a crack in the parking area for over a year, closer to the slope of the property, according to Potter. A geotechnical engineer has said the slope is borderline unstable. There is a concern that additional rain could lead to the slope becoming unstable.
Hoffman’s is going to have their engineer look at data pertaining to the slope, according to Potter.
If the slope fails, there is a question of how much of the parking lot will be affected, Potter said. If the slope failure could be isolated, the business may be allowed to reopen.
