Fasnachts have landed in Schuylkill County.
A traditional Pennsylvania Dutch donut, fasnachts are eaten the day before the Christian Lenten season begins, historically intended to use up any spare eggs, sugar, butter and in some cases, potato flour, left in one’s stores.
This year, that day falls on Feb. 17 and is also known as Fat Tuesday, Mardi Gras or, in the United Kingdom, Pancake Day.
No matter your creed, the simple yet indulgent pastries are popular, and for a good reason. That means that quantities sell fast, and two local bakeries selling the treats emphasize that sales are first come, first serve.

Here’s where to snag a fasnacht in Schuylkill County today and tomorrow.
C & C Candies
The bakery partners with Becca’s Gourmet Donuts and Coffee, an Amish bakery in Wyomissing, for their fasnacht supply. According to a Facebook post Monday morning, C & C Candies picked up its first round of fasnachts, totaling an impressive 400 dozen — but staff says quantities sell fast, so don’t wait to swing by the storefront.
Flavors: Plain, glazed, sugar and powdered sugar.
Hours: Monday and Tuesday, 5:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Price: $8 per half-dozen, $16 per dozen.
Location: 1305 Long Run Rd., Friedensburg.
Plain ‘N Fancy
Freshly made fasnachts are taking over this donut shop’s menu today and tomorrow — Plain N Fancy’s normal donut menu will return Wednesday.
Flavors: Plain, glazed, sugar, cinnamon sugar, powdered sugar. Filled varieties include Bavarian cream, white cream, apple, lemon, blueberry, strawberry and raspberry.
Hours: Monday and Tuesday, 6 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Price: $11 per half-dozen, $20 per dozen.
