MESHOPPEN — It was a familiar story for some at the District 2 Cross Country Championships on cloudy and windy Wednesday at the Wyoming County Fairgrounds.
Kendel Jones from Elk Lake won his fourth straight district title in Class 1A boys. Anna Pucilowski of Abington Heights claimed here second straight and third district title in Class 3A girls. Crestwood’s Mason Staude repeated as Class 2A boys champ.
There were some newcomers such as Seamus Wallace of West Scranton winning the Class 3A boys crown, Sadie Loftus from Valley View taking the Class 2A girls title and Kendyl Weisgold prevailing in Class 1A girls.
No matter the name, though, most of them were from the Lackawanna League. Besides having five of the six individual winners, the league secured nine of the district’s 10 team berths for the PIAA Championships to be run Nov. 1 at the Hershey Parkview Course.
Elk Lake boys and girls in Class 1A, Mid Valley in Class 2A boys, Wallenpaupack in Class 3A boys, and Abington Heights in Class 3A girls all repeated as district champs. Riverside boys (Class 1A), Montrose girls (Class 1A) and Lake-Lehman boys (Class 2A) placed second in the team standings in their respective classes to earn trips to states.
Class 2A girls produced the tightest margin as Valley View edged Wallenpaupack, 60-62, for the title. Both teams qualified for states.
In the day’s first race, Jones finished in 15:26.7 to notch his fourth straight district title.
Teammates Cody Adams and Parker Upright placed second and third to help the Warriors finish with 38 points. Mikey Schimelfenig was fourth to lead Riverside, which wound up with 61 points.
Individual state qualifiers in Class 1A boys were Avery Ronchi, Lackawanna Trail; Henry Decker, Lakeland; Maxx Kelly, Susquehanna; Paxton Pingarelli, Blue Ridge; Chase Litwin, Lackawanna Trail; Taran Lawrence, Holy Redeemer; Evan Beamer, Susquehanna; Thomas Gavin, Holy Cross; Sean Larkin, Mountain View; and Matt Schell, Susquehanna.
Weisgold, who finished second last year as a freshman, won this year in 19:30.7. Teammate Madison Kerr was third as the Lady Warriors totaled 40 points. Avery Kerr of Montrose was second, Addison Stephens fifth and Ava Rebello eighth to help the Lady Meteors finish with 87 points.
Holy Redeemer had two individual state qualifiers in Leah Smith and Adele Deemer. Old Forge also had two in Cali Talarico and Elena Bialkowski. Other individual qualifiers were Kiera Burke, Susquehanna; Grace Rushmer, Wyoming Seminary; Gemma Bistran, Holy Cross; Rylin Wech, Lakeland; Corinne Flynn, Mountain View; and Trinity Lord, Blue Ridge.
West Scranton’s Wallace won the Class 3A boys race in 16:42.7. That was 7.1 seconds ahead of last year’s champ Aiden Janowicz. The Buckhorns then had Christopher Smith finish eighth, Daniel Salinas ninth, Chase Predmore 10th and Benson Kizer 11th to breeze to the team title with 40 points. Abington Heights was second with 65 points.
Christian Matos Mendez and Gavin Adams from Hazleton Area, Jack Shoemaker of Abington Heights and Pittston Area’s Caden Boettger were individual state qualifiers.
Pucilowski took the Class 3A girls race in 18:43.0. Marley Gilboy was fifth, Calli Gilboy seventh, Morgan Kresge eighth, Julia Healey 14th, Kenadi Lotz 15th and Layla Caraballo 17th, enabling the Lady Comets to hold off Crestwood, 35-43, and earn their fourth straight district crown and 10th in the last 11 years.
Crestwood did have three individual state qualifiers in Katie Kozich, Mollie Kozich and Adrienne Shebelock. Delaware Valley’s Grace Holderith, who finished second, and Pittston Area’s Isabella Dessoye are also bound for Hershey.
Staude pulled away from Mid Valley’s Jacob Borrelli midway through the Class 2A boys race and pulled away to win in 16:10.6. Borrelli was second in 16:32.7, leading the Spartans to the team title with 42 points.
Lake-Lehman was second with 47 points as Bodhi Cronin, Stephen Martin, Parker Smith and Finn Cronin placed in the top seven.
Scranton Prep is sending three individual qualifiers to states in Vincent O’Malley, Gavin Gallagher and Nicholas Michel. Two of Staude’s Crestwood teammates will accompany him in Rowan Dietrich and Ethan Deivert. Also qualifying in Class 2A boys were Chase Comiskey of Dallas, Cooper Courtright from Valley View, Berwick’s Brennan Spaide and Joseph Bly of Hanover Area.
Loftus captured the Class 2A girls title in 19:41.7. The Cougars then had Riley Mackrell finish eighth, Emily Loomis 11th and Makenna Adams 12th. When Hailey Boshman crossed the line in 27th, it narrowly gave them the team title over Wallenpaupack, which was led by June Brown’s fourth-place finish.
Three Lake-Lehman girls were individual qualifiers in Ava Jones, Olivia Corcoran and Kinley Purdy. North Pocono had two qualifiers in runnerup Evolette Reinard and Sarah O’Donnell. Others include Madelyn Graves of Tunkhannock, Katherine Legg from Honesdale, Western Wayne’s Kaitlyn Kloss, Matilda Serrano from Nanticoke Area and Isabella Costa of Wyoming Area.
