PITTSBURGH, PA — Let the superstore wars just north of Pittsburgh begin.

Grocery and retail chain Meijer, which already has plans to open a store in Cranberry, plans to open a 159,000-square-foot supercenter in the Jackson Pointe Commerce Park in Butler County, according to the Pittsburgh Business Times. The store will be located just off of Route 19 in Zelienopole.

A construction timetable and targeted opening date was unavailable.

A Forbes profile of the chain states that Meijer is a family-owned grocery chain operating in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky and Wisconsin. Its supercenter stores offer groceries but also have departments such as fashion, automotive, home decor, health and beauty care, pharmacy, electronics and banking.

Meijer already is planning to open its first Pennsylvania store in Cranberry. The store will anchor Henderson Crossing, a 45-acre mixed use development in the northeast corner of Route 228 and Franklin Road near North Catholic High School.

The site will contain multiple apartment buildings and restaurants and be anchored by the 159,000 square-foot Meijer superstore.

Meijer will have some competition in Butler County. Wegmans Food Markets is building its first Pittsburgh-area store on 13 acres near Cool Springs Drive and the Cranberry Springs development. That store is supposed to open in 2027.
