EASTON, Pa. (WFMZ) — At Wednesday’s Easton City Council meeting a proposed resolution calling on the Trump administration to take action on immigration reform caused a lot of tension.

The introduction, by Councilman Roger Ruggles, listed the country’s history of welcoming immigrants, their contributions, called for a clear path to citizenship and urged for immigrants to be treated with dignity, echoing a similar resolution proposed by Ruggles passed by city council in 2017.

“Just basically saying nothing’s been done. What are you doing,” explained Ruggles referring to the federal government.

But language and edits added to a 2025 version of the resolution caused points of contention Wednesday night centered around suggestions that no city official or employee shall request, record or access a citizen’s immigration status, disclose a citizen’s immigration status unless required by law, and not utilize city resources to provide information to ICE.

The resolution, which was tabled, would be sent to President Donald Trump, U.S. Senators John Fetterman and Dave McCormick, and representative Ryan Mackenzie along with 21 other cities across the nation asking them to sign in agreement.
