Inspired by nostalgia and now a Halloween tradition, Throop is holding its seventh annual Trunk or Treat on Sunday from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Throop Civic Center, 500 Sanderson St.

When Throop Civic Center Director Corey Shevchik wanted to host a trunk or treat, the timing for the first was just right.

“Trunk or treats were becoming popular on a larger scale, and trick-or-treating in every neighborhood was phasing out,” Shevchik said.

Throop Civic Center wanted to bring back the fun of Halloween and the art of trick-or-treating.

“I remember trick-or-treating when I was a kid, and every porch light was on. Everyone welcomed you,” Shevchik said. Growing up in Throop, he remembered going from door to door during Halloween with friends.

“Times have certainly changed, and we wanted to do something where the kids could enjoy themselves while maintaining social distancing through the pandemic,” Shevchik said, mentioning how the borough’s trunk or treat has changed from year to year.

The whole community gets involved, whether they donate candy, prizes or host a trunk. Someone is always wanting to help during the event.

“It’s a way for kids to still experience the excitement of Halloween, especially to see how the trunks are decorated and show off their creativity,” Shevchik said.

The community can enjoy some unique Halloween fun. With a parking lot full of creativity, there is something for everyone.

The first year the event had 500 children, and it has grown to where 800 kids are expected, Shevchik said. The event is rain or shine.

By providing a centralized location for children, the Trunk or Treat is a safe way to trick or treat.

“It’s something to do for the whole community,” Shevchik said. He added the event will feature DJ Donna Diva and trunk sponsors, including individuals from the community, organizations, state representatives and church associations.

“Instead of walking neighborhoods where kids may occasionally see someone handing out candy, here they get to go trunk to trunk, which makes it fun and easier for the parents and guardians,” he said.

Shevchik enjoys bringing the community together and highlights they wouldn’t be able to do it without the generosity of community members.

“We love to see the creativity that people come up with year after year,” he said.
