A Scranton man faces felony firearms charges and other counts after city police say he threatened to kill a woman and officers later recovered a stolen handgun from his vehicle.
Charges against Kevin Lamont Ferman, 39, 433 Fourth Ave., stem from an investigation that began Wednesday when police responded to the Bellevue section address for a report of a woman who was chased down the street by a man holding a gun. Officers ultimately located the woman, Khrystia Price, who was unharmed, at a separate residence.
Price told police that she brought Ferman’s belongings to 433 Fourth Ave. because he invited her, noting Ferman began an argument with her upon her arrival. Ferman, who was in possession of a handgun during the argument, began to chase Price down the street and told her “If I find you, I’m going to kill you,” police wrote in charging documents.
Price, who called 911, told the dispatcher that Ferman drives a black Nissan. She later told police that he was trying to sell the firearm on Facebook under the username Kevin King, and that she believed the gun was in the car.
Patrolman John Cantafio found the vehicle, a black 2015 Nissan Altima registered to Ferman, parked about a block and a half from Ferman’s residence. Police ultimately secured a warrant to search the vehicle after Cantafio’s K-9, Aiden, conducted an exterior sniff of the Nissan and gave a “positive indication,” according to an affidavit of probable cause. The search took place at a city police building where the vehicle was towed.
Officers searching the Nissan recovered a black Ruger LCP .380 handgun with a partially obliterated serial number, a sock containing 38 rounds of ammunition, a pistol magazine containing four additional rounds and a metal grinder containing marijuana residue, police said. The pistol “showed as a stolen firearm,” per the affidavit, which notes the gun, ammo and magazine were located under the Nissan’s gear-shifting mechanism.
Ferman, who is prohibited by law from possessing a gun due to a past felony robbery conviction, faces several felony firearms-related charges, a felony count of receiving stolen property and misdemeanor counts of making terroristic threats, simple assault and possession of drug paraphernalia.
He remains in Lackawanna County Prison in lieu of $100,000 bail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Oct. 22.
