Basketball players from Erie and Venango counties won the latest Erie Times-News Seaway Window and AHN Sports Medicine athlete of the week polls.
Erie County’s victor was Josh Cornwell. Northwestern’s male nominee received 96 votes out of 537 cast.

Cornwell represented the Wildcats thanks to his 21-point performance during their 65-62 win against the General McLane Lancers.
Oil City’s Nevin Stinson, with 81 votes, was second Cornwell. That meant the Oilers nearly recorded a sweep of the polls.
Sophia Garmong was the female winner. The Oil City female nominee’s 114 votes were 10 more than Grove City’s Lola Kolbe.
The Oilers’ girls basketball team, aided by her team-high 12 points, beat the rival Franklin Knights 44-19.

How it works
The Erie Times-News, Seaway Window and AHN Sports Medicine, from now through early March, will sponsor male and female athlete of the week polls for District 10’s winter sports season.
The ballots will consist of nominees for basketball, swimming/diving, bowling, indoor track and field, and hockey.
Male and female wrestlers won’t be included, albeit for a notable reason. Separate polls will be conducted for that sport as of this season.
The male and female athlete ballots will run online every Monday at 5 p.m. through Wednesday at 5 p.m., unless otherwise noted.
Fans can suggest nominees for polls at sports@timesnews.com. Please include the player, school, sport and the specific reason why he or she should be the school’s nominee based on an accomplishment during that calendar week.

Overall accomplishments won’t be accepted. Once an athlete wins a poll, he or she is ineligible to be nominated for the remainder of the season.
