Marie E. Duffy

OBITUARY

Marie Duffy, 94, of Scranton, passed away peacefully on Ash Wednesday at Elon Skilled Nursing and Rehab, leaving behind a family who will forever hear her voice reminding them exactly how things should be done.

Marie was the wife of the late Thomas Duffy. A proud and strong-willed Slavic woman, she believed firmly in doing things her way. There was no in between. She seemed to know everything before it happened and unofficially served as the neighborhood watch, often aware of the latest news before anyone else was. She worked in factories and cleaned homes, but her most important role was being Nanu to her grandchildren. Tough was not something she tried to be. It was simply who she was.

Her faith was deeply rooted in St. Ann, whose strength, devotion, and dedication to family reflected the values Marie carried throughout her life. She admired what St. Ann stood for and tried to live by those same principles of perseverance, faith, and unwavering love of family.

She is survived by her daughters, Marieann Duffy-Mates and her husband, Richard, of Scranton; and Patricia Mataloni and her husband, Dr. Peter Mataloni, of Dunmore. She loved her daughters in the only way she knew how, with strength, high expectations, and a tough love that shaped them into who they are today. In her later years, she was especially grateful for the steadfast care, advocacy, and constant presence shown to her during her final chapter.

She was the proud grandmother of David Mates and his wife, Katie, of Dickson City; Thomas Mates and his wife, Stephanie, of Virginia; Adam Mataloni of Dunmore; Peter Mataloni Jr. of Dunmore; and Carmella Mataloni Casey and her husband, Robert Casey, of Dunmore. She was also blessed with five great-grandchildren, Violet and Azelia Mates; Jordan and Peter Mataloni; and Patrick Casey.

She loved her family fiercely and in her own way. Her great-grandchildren brought her immense pride and joy, and nothing made her happier than seeing them or receiving their pictures.

Marie lived by her favorite saying, Live, suffer and die in pain. It sounded dramatic, and sometimes she meant it. What she truly modeled was resilience. She lived fully, endured whatever came her way, and loved her family in the only way she knew how: fiercely, stubbornly, and forever. To know Marie was to understand strength. To be loved by her was to be loved for life.

The family would like to thank everyone at Elon Skilled Nursing and Rehab and Hospice of the Sacred Heart.

A private celebration of life was held on Friday, February 20, 2026.
