A 37-year-old Throop man is charged with homicide by motor vehicle after causing a wrong-way crash on Interstate 380 late Friday night while under the influence of alcohol, state police said.
Police said Mark Castillo of 405 Loftus St., Apt. 2, was driving with a suspended license from a previous DUI offense. Castillo had three prior convictions for DUI within the last 10 years.
A passenger in the vehicle Castillo hit, Darrel Ambrose Jr., 24, of Tobyhanna, died from severe head trauma, according to Lackawanna County Coroner Tim Rowland. Three additional people from that vehicle were transported to Geisinger Community Medical Center, according to police.
County dispatchers received a call at 11:08 p.m. regarding a wrong-way driver on the interstate.
While traveling to the crash, troopers were informed a wrong-way driver had crashed a black Kia Sorento into a while Chevrolet Cruze that was traveling in the correct direction along the interstate in Covington Twp., according to the criminal complaint.
Upon arrival, troopers noticed the Sorento had sustained severe damage, police said.
Troopers spotted the Cruze — which was overturned — and saw two females, who had suffered injuries from the crash, screaming in pain outside the car, according to the criminal complaint. Ambrose, the front-seat passenger of the Chevrolet, was dead at the scene, troopers said.
Based on preliminary evidence at the scene, the Kia was traveling north in the southbound lanes at a high rate of speed when it struck the Chevrolet head on, police said.
Castillo admitted being at fault for the crash and said several times that he messed up, according to the criminal complaint. Troopers also detected an odor of alcohol coming from Castillo.
A woman in the rear passenger seat of the Chevrolet had to be extricated from the vehicle and suffered severe injuries, police said. She was transported to the hospital along with the driver and other rear passenger, according to the criminal complaint.
Additionally, Castillo was transported to Geisinger Community Medical Center for an evaluation and blood draw, police said.
Police charged Castillo with homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence, three counts of aggravated assault by vehicle while DUI, DUI, driving with a suspended license, careless driving resulting in serious bodily injury, recklessly endangering another person and other traffic offenses.
Castillo remains in Lackawanna County Prison without bail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for March 12 at 11 a.m.
