Scranton Prep’s junior’s two-sport standout was into heavy medal this weekend.

First, Kaszuba totaled nine points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals to help the basketball team beat Valley View, 52-47, in the District 2 Class 4A final at Mohegan Arena — the Classics’ fourth straight title and eighth in nine years.

Then at the District 2 Class 2A Swimming Championships, she won gold in the 100-yard breaststroke, was part of the victorious 200-yard medley relay and 200-yard free relay teams and took bronze in the 50-yard freestyle to help Scranton Prep capture the team title over Dallas, 266.5-253.

In the basketball final, how did you and your teammates have a response every time Valley View mounted a challenge: It definitely was a challenging game. But we wanted it and we were going to get it no matter what we had to do. They battled really hard, but we knew if we played the way we play, we were capable of beating them.

What did it mean to win a fourth straight title: It means everything, especially because no one really believed in us after the five seniors (graduated). So it showed others we could do it, too, even if they didn’t believe in us. We believe in ourselves.

On the first day of swimming, you were part of the two gold-medal relay teams. How did that set the tone for the rest of the meet: We love those two relays, that group of girls. We just wanted to go out and have fun. There’s one senior on our relay, Sophia Galko, so we knew it was going to be one of her final races, so we wanted to go out and win for her. Once we had those and how some of the races went on Friday, we knew that we could do it.

Describe repeating as district champ in the 100 breast: It was incredible, a great feeling to have. But I have to just keep improving, getting better and go out and get it again next year. I love that event, it’s probably one of favorites. It makes me want to go out there and do my best.

What did it mean to hold off Dallas and win the team title: It definitely means a lot to us. We put in a lot of hard work the whole season. First we got the league title and that was pretty cool. If we swam the way we could, we knew we could get them we could get the district one, too.

How tough is it juggling the two sports in the same season: It’s really hard sometimes. But I have my family and a good support system from my teams and coaches. It works out in the end, but it’s definitely rough. Do you sometimes wish you only did one sport: Sometimes if I’m really sore or tired, I think it. But honestly, it’s such a privilege to do both, I wouldn’t give it up for the world.

What does the basketball team need to do to be successful and advance in the state tournament: We have a pretty good shot, we were looking at the bracket (Sunday). Lancaster Catholic is going to be a hard game, they have some pretty tough girls and they’re very well-coached. But again, if we just play the way that we can, we know we’ll be just fine.

What goals do you have for the state swim meet: I definitely want to place top eight in the relays and in my 100 breaststroke. Ultimately, I’m just going for the best time and try to get a 1:03. It would be a personal best.
