A child has been arrested after, officials said, a boy was killed in a shooting that happened in Lakewood Township, New Jersey, on Monday night.
According to Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley Billhimer, a child — who officials have not identified — has been arrested and charged after a boy was killed by being shot in the back in an incident that happened at about 8:17 p.m. on Sunday.
At that time, officials said, officers responded to the area along Pearl Street in Lakewood Township to find a boy — who police have not identified — who had been shot once in the back.
The boy was taken to a nearby hospital where, police said, he died of his injuries.
An investigation into the incident, officials said, led to the arrest of a child who has been charged with murder and weapon offenses for their suspected involvement in the shooting.
The child, police said, was being held at the Ocean County Juvenile Detention Center as of Monday morning.
NBC10 has reached out to law enforcement officials in an effort to learn more about this incident.
