Herman P. Mattern, Jr.

OBITUARY

Herman P. Mattern Jr., 79, of Moscow, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 2, 2026, at his home with his loving family by his side.

Born on May 22, 1946, in Sterling Township, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late Herman P. Mattern Sr. and Kathryn (Wheeler) Mattern. A lifelong resident of Moscow, Herman was married to the late MaryAnne (Shaffer) Mattern for 41 years. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather whose quiet strength and steady presence meant everything to his family.

Herman was employed for many years as a truck driver, a career that reflected his strong work ethic and dedication. After retirement, he found great joy in caring for his yard, taking pride in keeping it pristine. He especially loved sitting on his back porch, relaxing and watching the critters, enjoying the home and life he worked so hard to build. Herman also cherished his beloved companions, Blacky and Grady, who truly were his best buddies.

He is survived by his daughter, Chrissy L. Cook and her husband, Donald, of Madison Township; his son, Lawrence G. Shaffer and his companion, Laura Lee Lakes, of Moscow; two grandchildren, Larry A. Shaffer and Katrina M. O’Neill, both of Moscow; as well as many nieces, nephews, and great-nieces/nephews. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Robert and Edward Mattern.

Funeral services and interment will be conducted at Fairview Memorial Park, Elmhurst, on Saturday, March 7, 2026, at 10:30 a.m.
