LORAIN, Ohio — Two bodies have been found in Lake Erie after a vehicle had gone into the water Friday morning near the Beaver Park Marina in Lorain.
The Lorain Police Underwater Recovery Team found the two bodies — both are female — shortly after 8 a.m.
One of the victims was found inside the vehicle, while police said the second was found a short time later.
Their identities are being withheld at this time.
“The incident remains under active investigation as officers and investigators continue working to determine the circumstances surrounding the crash and why the vehicle left the roadway,” according to Lorain police.
3News was at the scene when the vehicle was pulled from the water shortly before 10 a.m.
INCIDENT DETAILS
The Lorain Police Department says the situation started around 4:17 a.m. when officers responded to reports of a utility pole that had been struck and knocked down near the intersection of West Erie Avenue and Oak Point Road.
“At the same time, dispatch received additional calls regarding an 18-year-old male believed to have entered a nearby residence without permission,” according to a press release from Lorain police. “Officers made contact with the male and observed injuries that appeared consistent with those typically sustained in a motor vehicle crash.”
He told police he was with two female acquaintances while riding in the back seat of a vehicle that struck at least one utility pole before leaving the roadway and entering Lake Erie.
“The male stated that he was able to escape the vehicle through a back seat window, but indicated he had not seen the two female occupants since the crash and did not know whether they were able to exit the vehicle,” according to police.
He was taken to the hospital for treatment of injuries believed to have been sustained during the crash. His current medical status is unknown.
“At this time, he has not been charged with any criminal offenses,” according to police.
