Wheeling, W. Va. – After gaining their first win of the season, the Wheeling Men’s Lacrosse team (2-1, 0-1) will open their Great-Midwest Athletic Conference (GMAC) stretch in Painesville, OH against the Lake Erie College Storm.
The Cardinals have had a challenging start to their season, but gained their first win against Holy Family University 8-7. Wheeling has played Holy Family two other times, and won both times, so they were walking into the game confidently. The game started off hot with a goal from Finn Wotton within the first 30 seconds. The Cardinals didn’t score again until the last 47 seconds of the second quarter. It wasn’t until the fourth quarter when their shots were finally finding the back of the net. They were able to put up six goals to take and secure the lead. The Cardinals were able to continue their winning streak when playing Holy Family, and will take that momentum into GMAC play.
Jack Rowe is currently leading the Cardinals in goals and points with five goals and six points, one assist. He was able to take the lead during the game against Holy Family after scoring four goals, all being in the fourth quarter to help achieve the win. Andrew Turner and Finn Wotton are right behind Rowe in points and goals with Turner having five points, one goal and four assists, and Wotton having four goals and four points.
Goalkeeper Landen Martin is leading the Cardinals defensively with eight ground balls and having a save percentage of .611 after only allowing Holy Family to score seven goals and making 11 saves. Riley Lincoln has also helped out defensively with causing four turnovers and picking up three ground balls.
The Matchup
The Cardinals and Storm will be meeting for the 17th time in program history. The Storm took the win in their last meeting at Bishop Schmitt Field during the 2025 season. It was a back and forth game with the greatest goal difference being two in the last couple minutes of the game. Wheeling was able to score in the final 90 seconds to make the final score 9-8. That was their smallest goal difference loss since 2015, when they lost 7-6. The last time the Cardinals won against the Storm was in 2017, 8-7, after going into triple overtime.
Lake Erie started their GMAC play against #4 Seton Hill, Thomas Moore, and Davis and Elkins, and are 1-2 in conference after gaining their first win against Davis and Elkins 12-11 in overtime. Redshirt Junior Andrew Cramer led the Storm’s attacking end during Davis and Elkins with four goals and four points. Two other attackers, John Collins and Joey Ellison, also had four points on the day with Collins having three goals and one assist, and Ellison having one goal and three assists. Senior Defender Nicolas Shankland led the Storm defensively with picking up four ground balls, causing two turnovers, and going 2-4 in faceoffs.
