A recovery operation was under way Saturday afternoon on the Lehigh River in the Coplay and Northampton area after a body was found.

Dive teams were called to Canal and Stewart streets in Northampton, near Canal Park, according to Northampton County emergency radio dispatches.

Lehigh County Coroner Daniel Buglio told The Morning Call from the scene that an adult body was being recovered from the Lehigh County side of the river, although his team is staged at Canal Park on the Northampton side.

No further details were immediately available.

The area is near the spot where a man fleeing police jumped into the river late Thursday morning. The man had tried to make it across the river, but went under and did not resurface, Coplay Police Chief Ryan Emmerich had said on Friday.

Area rescue crews spent hours searching for the man Thursday, but were not able to find him.

Buglio said he could not confirm whether Saturday’s recovery operation was connected to Thursday’s search.
