(WJET/WFXP)– The City of Erie needs a logo for their America 250 celebration and they’re now putting students up to the challenge and asking them to flex their creative muscles to create a logo for the city’s celebratory plans.

The city and its partners announced the contest on Wednesday for students from K-12 to create digital or hand-drawn designs showcasing patriotic themes and pride in Erie to be used across their advertising for the event.

Students will have from March 11 to noon on March 31 to submit their designs on the city’s website, with the winner being announced at the City of Erie Cummer Series announcement on April 14.

In addition to having their designs at the center of the event’s promo materials, the winner will also get to join Mayor Daria Devlin on stage to count down the fireworks on July 3 and receive a ‘We Love Erie’ prize basket filled with free memberships and tickets from contest partners.

Erie’s theme in the national celebration on Independence Day weekend is ‘Erie 250: Light & Liberty on the Lake,’ and the mayor said she’s excited to see what Erie’s students come up with.

“America’s 250th birthday is a once-in-a-lifetime milestone, and Erie is excited to celebrate it in a big way,” said the mayor said. “To do that, we want our youth — our future — involved, and this contest gives them the opportunity to share their creativity and help create a mark that represents Erie pride. I’m looking forward to seeing what our local youth create!”

The Erie Philharmonic, Hagen History Center, Erie SeaWolves, Erie Playhouse, VisitErie, Erie-Western PA Port Authority, expERIEnce Children’s Museum, Erie Events, and the Erie Zoo all partnered with the city for Wednesday’s announcement. Designs can be submitted online here.
