Richard Beggy | Saint Joseph’s
When Saint Joseph’s needed the biggest hits of the weekend, the bat almost always belonged to Richard Beggy.
The junior powered the Hawks to a three-game Atlantic 10 sweep of Richmond, delivering multiple clutch hits as Saint Joseph’s opened conference play with momentum.
Beggy finished the weekend hitting .462 (6-for-13) with five RBIs, including the series’ biggest swing.
In Saturday’s 4–3 victory, Beggy stepped to the plate with two outs and the bases loaded in the ninth inning, lining a two-run single to left field that lifted the Hawks to a dramatic comeback win.
His impact began a day earlier in Friday’s 11–9 victory, when Beggy went 4-for-4 with three RBIs while delivering two critical run-scoring hits. He also made one of the weekend’s most important defensive plays, leaping to catch a line drive before doubling off a runner at third base to erase a Richmond scoring threat.
Across the series, Beggy did not strike out in 13 plate appearances, consistently producing quality at-bats as the Hawks swept a Richmond team that entered the season as the Atlantic 10 preseason favorite.
Pitcher of the Week
Marty Coyne | Penn
Penn junior left-hander Marty Coyne delivered one of the most impressive pitching performances of the young college baseball season Saturday afternoon.
Coyne tossed eight scoreless innings, allowing just four hits as the Quakers defeated East Carolina 1–0 at Lewis Field at Clark-LeClair Stadium.
The outing marked the longest start of Coyne’s career and earned him his first win of the 2026 season.
Working efficiently throughout the afternoon, Coyne did not issue a walk and kept the Pirates from generating sustained offensive pressure. The left-hander faced 27 batters and threw 80 pitches, allowing only four base hits while striking out four.
His performance came against an East Carolina program that consistently fields one of the stronger offenses in the American Athletic Conference and plays in one of college baseball’s toughest home environments.
The victory improved Penn to 3–9 on the season and showcased Coyne’s continued development as a key piece of the Quakers’ rotation.
