(WHTM)– A new report confirms that energy prices are up significantly, and Pennsylvania is one of the states hit the hardest.
Data from the Joint Economic Committee in Washington shows the cost of electricity is up over 12% compared to last year in Pennsylvania alone.
The average Pennsylvanian is paying $210 more annually. Majority Chair of the Pennsylvania House Energy Committee, Elizabeth Fielder, said the state is not producing enough energy to keep up with what she calls a “tremendous” demand.
She said she wants more renewable energy, like solar panels, to help.

Pennsylvania is a part of the PJM grid, which serves the Mid-Atlantic and Midwest states. Governor Josh Shapiro has been a vocal critic of PJM, saying its delays in approving new energy sources are responsible for driving up costs.
Fielder said that is a part of it. “Many have seen the articles about the fact that profits for these utilities keep going up, and so do regular people’s utility bills, and that doesn’t sit well with me,” Fielder said. “That’s not a jab at any one person or business, but I do think it’s the reality we face right now.”
