SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA CO. (WOLF) — A Lackawanna County man who worked for the U.S. Postal Service is facing federal charges after being accused of stealing mail and committing bank fraud.

Federal prosecutors say 33-year-old Nicholas Pecko of Vandling was indicted by a grand jury. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania, Pecko is accused of taking two checks from the mail totaling more than $6,500.

Investigators allege the checks were altered to list Pecko as the payee before being deposited as part of a fraud scheme.

The case was investigated by the U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General. Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah Lloyd is handling the prosecution.

If convicted, Pecko could face up to 35 years in federal prison, along with supervised release and fines. Officials note that any sentence would be determined by a judge under federal guidelines.
