Scranton Prep did more than just win another Class 2A boys state title at the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association Team Championships.
The Cavaliers did so with a historic performance.
Brenden Bell, Cole Powell and Ben Boyanoski all broke par on Wednesday on the Penn State White Course to make the Cavaliers the first to finish with an under-par team score in Class 2A where they were also the first repeat champion.
The record-setting, 6-under-par, 284 total was eight shots better than Erie Cathedral Prep and also allowed Scranton Prep to tie Sewickley Academy for the most Class 2A titles with three. Sewickley Academy’s last championship came in 2019, the year before Scranton Prep won its first.
Bell led the way with a 4-under, 68, Powell added a 70 and Boyanoski a 71.
Guy Rothery completed the four-man team score with a 73. Bobby Stott shot a 77.
Bell turned in a bogey-free round with four birdies, three of which came while shooting 33 on the back nine.
Powell followed up his individual state title the previous two days with another strong effort. He made it to 13 before his only bogey of the day and managed three birdies.
“It felt great to not only get it for myself, but to be able to get it as a team as well,” Powell said.
Boyanoski, the District 2 individual champion, got to 2-under early with birdies on 2 and 3.
Rothery was at even par as late as 15 in an up-and-down round that featured five birdies and six bogeys.
Stott went 6-over for the first two holes, then settled down to be under par the rest of the way.
Devon Prep was third in the eight-team field with 296, followed by: Fairview 298, Elizabeth Forward 304, Shady Side Academy 305, York Catholic 315 and Bishop Guilfoyle 316.
State Class 3A
Abington Heights finished last in the eight-team Class 3A field at the PIAA Championships, posting a 16-over, 304, just one shot behind Hershey and two behind Cedar Crest.
Meyer Sebastian broke par with a 71 to lead the Comets on the Penn State Blue Course where he birdied three of the first six holes.
Unionville shot 2-under, 286 to win the state title by one over Radnor and State College.
South Fayette was fourth with 296 and La Salle College High fifth with 297.
Philip Matthews shot 76, Ryan Boyd 77 and Will Herold 80 to complete the Abington Heights team score. Connor O’Malley-Kalinoski had an 82.
Matthews broke par on the back nine after going out in 41.
Boyd was even over his last eight holes.
Herold started strong with consecutive birdies.
Subregional Class 3A
Boyd shot 73 Oct. 14 at Williamsport Country Club to lead Abington Heights past Jersey Shore 312-329 in the District 2-4 Subregional, which determined a berth at the state tournament.
Matthews and O’Malley-Kalinoski shot 79s.
Herold added an 81.
Jersey Shore was led by Carter Girton with a 78.
Subregional Class 2A
Bell fired a 67 and Scranton Prep routed Towanda 290-338 in the subregional to determine a berth at State College.
Powell had a 70 and Boyanoski a 73 while Towanda’s best score was a 79 by Graham Welles.
Stott added an 80 for the Cavaliers.
District 2 Class 3A
Abington Heights used a strong back nine Oct. 6 at Elkview Country Club to pull away from Pittston Area 315-332.
The title was the third straight for the Comets and second straight that came by beating the Patriots in the final.
Comparing the top four scores from the six-player lineups, Abington Heights needed 37s by Boyd and Matthews to lead just 157-159 at the turn.
“I knew there was better play in them,” Comets coach Frank Summa said. “And, they’ve been playing the back side up at Elkview better the few times we played up there this year.”
All six Comets shot 41 or better, a feat that Patrick Ruane was the only Pittston Area player to accomplish, on the back nine.
“I didn’t look at the nine-hole scores when I was up at the tent, even though I was in the last group out for my team,” said Boyd, who shot 38 on the back to finish as medalist with a 75. “I just kind of thought that we would do alright.
“I trusted my team and I knew we were going to pull it out.”
The Comets wound up with five of the best six scores in the Class 3A match where Ruane’s 76 was second best.
Boyd used consistency to beat that by a stroke.
“I was hitting iron shots into the green, not really giving myself a lot of birdie looks,” Boyd said after stringing together a series of two-putt pars to go along with two birdies. “But I was getting the pars, which is all that really matters.”
Matthews shot 78 and both Herold and Meyer had 81s to complete the team score for the Comets.
O’Malley-Kalinoski finished with an 82 and Kelley an 86.
District 2 Class 2A
Scranton Prep rolled over Lake-Lehman 298-318 at Elkview to win its third straight district title.
Powell led the way with a 70 and Bell shot a 71. Boyanoski and Stott each came in with 77s, one shot higher than Lake-Lehman’s co-leaders of Jackson Norconk and Jack Oliver.
