HANOVER TWP., Pa.- If long security lines and airport delays amid a partial government shutdown have you dreading your next trip, the passenger airline that does the most flying in and out of Lehigh Valley International Airport (ABE) has a deal for you.Â
On Monday, Allegiant announced the launch of a new “Travel with Confidence” policy. Customers whose flights are scheduled to depart between now and the end of the shutdown can change or cancel their itineraries without penalty, the carrier said. The policy applies to new and existing bookings.
Allegiant said customers who want to adjust their itineraries must call, chat, text or email Allegiant Customer Care directly. You can find that contact information here.
The partial federal government shutdown began on February 14, after Congress failed to fund the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) amid a disagreement over immigration enforcement.
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is among the agencies impacted by the impasse.Â
According to Lauren Bis, acting assistant secretary for public affairs with DHS, more than 400 TSA officers have left their jobs since the shutdown began.Â
On Monday, Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers began arriving at some of the nation’s busiest airports to assist with TSA staffing shortages. President Trump said deploying the agents in that capacity was his idea.
Allegiant noted that flights across its network are operating as scheduled amid the shutdown, including at the many smaller markets the airline serves. “These airports often provide a more streamlined travel experience, with less crowded terminals and easier navigation from check-in to gate,” the carrier said.
Allegiant is one of four airlines that serve ABE in Hanover Twp., Lehigh County, but it offers far more destinations than the other three. According to the airport’s website, Allegiant flies non-stop to 11 destinations from ABE; eight of them are in Florida.Â
