SCRANTON — There is an adage in sports that offense sells tickets, and defense wins championships.

It is usually one assigned to the regular season and playoffs. Rarely does it apply to an all-star game.

However, in the annual Lackawanna Interscholastic Athletic Association Girls Senior All-Star game Monday night, one could argue it determined the outcome.

Addison Kilmer, the four-year standout from Mountain View, scored 12 points, blocked six shots and collected eight rebounds in limited action to lead the Blue All-Star Team to a 43-24 win over the Red All-Star Team to wrap up the high school girls basketball season.

Kilmer secured another accolade in her career, earning Most Valuable Player for the Blue Team.

“The people on my team made this so fun,” said Kilmer, who will graduate as the second all-time leading scorer in Lackawanna League history. “I thought it was going to be a little awkward because we had never played together before, but we played well. We were super hyped and happy for each other.”

It was a rewarding night when Kilmer, the Lackawanna Division III player of the year and defensive player of the year, showed off her talents one more time locally before she takes her game to East Stroudsburg University next season.

Before the game, Kilmer won the free-throw shooting contest by drilling 23 from the charity stripe.

“I was just trying to get into my zone,” Kilmer said. “They made me go by myself, so I was more nervous. But they kept going down.”

In the game, the 6-foot-1 center swished two 3-pointers in the first quarter to help the Blue Team build a 16-8 lead that it never relinquished. She also scored four points in the third quarter when the Blue Team outscored the Red Team, 16-7, to put the game away.

Dunmore senior Amanda Dempsey was one of four players on the Red Team to score four points. She also grabbed six rebounds to earn MVP.

“It was super fun,” said Dempsey, the Lackawanna Division II player of the year. “Especially to play with my Dunmore teammates one last time, and with a lot of girls who I played against for a long time, was pretty cool. We appreciated each other as players. It was a fun experience.”

In addition to Kilmer’s performance, North Pocono’s Celia DeCesare, who played one final game for her coach Joe Ferguson, scored eight points. Delaware Valley’s Leah Bird also scored eight points, which included two 3-pointers.

Delaware Valley’s Jordan Dickerson scored six points, Forest City’s Mehlayia St. Hilaire scored four and Valley View’s Ava Gazoo scored two. Carbondale Area’s Maurie Newcomb, who won the pre-game 3-point shooting contest with 14, finished with three points.

Elk Lake’s Madisyn Casselbury, Riverside’s Gabi Blasi and Dunmore’s Jackie Brown, who, along with Dempsey, played for coach Carrie Toomey for the final time, each scored four points. Riverside’s Kiley Williams and Cassidy Merrifield each added three points, and Holy Cross’ Ava Schmidt scored two.
