BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Say yes to the dress without saying no to the price tag!

The YWCA Bethlehem is hosting its “pop-up prom shop” this weekend.

69 News Reporter Sydney Kay was in Bethlehem with more on how it is helping students find the best looks at a fraction of the cost.

YWCA Bethlehem Executive Director Delia Marrero said the pop-up shop is one of the most exciting events the organization has each year. The pop-up prom shop is a fundraiser for YWCA Bethlehem’s youth programs, but it’s also a community engagement event.

The shop opens up at 8 a.m. Saturday at the Wind Creek Event Center in Bethlehem. Preregistrations are closed, but people can come on the day of the event and give organizers their information.

People are free to shop the dresses and try them on. The prom attire will cost $20. With a grant from Kiwanis, students can get vouchers to help offset that cost.

In addition to dresses, the shop offers accessories, makeup, and goodie bags.

Young people and their parents, along with volunteers, make the pop-up shop possible, she said.

Marrero said YWCA Bethlehem serves an average of 170 families a year through the pop-up prom shop.

Organizers accumulated the gowns that will be available at this Saturday’s event through donations over the last few months, beginning in November. Multiple partners have helped with donation drives.

Wind Creek and Highmark Blue Shield are sponsoring the event.

Aliya Ali, an Administrative Support Specialist, said people come from all over for the shop.

“It’s just really impactful” to see the girls come in, try on dresses, and not have to worry about the cost, Ali said.

Ali said almost 1,000 dresses are available.
