Coming off a successful girls and boys lacrosse season, Lackawanna Interscholastic Athletic Association teams return an abundance of talent as the sport continues to gain interest.
Abington Heights girls and Delaware Valley boys each went undefeated in league play and won Wyoming Valley Conference championships.
In the District 2 playoffs, Abington Heights (Class 2A) and Delaware Valley (Class 3A) claimed the girls’ titles, while Delaware Valley (Class 3A) and Crestwood (Class 2A) won the boys’ championships.
Abington Heights girls also won 22 straight games before losing in the PIAA Class 2A semifinals.
The new season is upon us, and battles have already been waged early.
Expectations are high for an exciting spring.
Girls
Abington Heights and Crestwood will renew their highly intense rivalry in the WVC and District 2 Class 2A.
Morgan Davis, last season’s Times-Tribune All-Region Female Player of the Year, and Allie Rothenberger, the WVC Coaches’ Player of the Year, lead Abington Heights in defense of its championships.
Davis, a sophomore, scored a team-high 83 goals and had 29 assists last season. She scored 11 goals during the Lady Comets’ surge in the PIAA playoffs.
Rothenberger, a La Salle commit, scored 70 goals and had 32 assists last season. She was The Times-Tribune All-Region Female Player of the Year in 2024.
In addition to those two stars, Abington Heights also returns Rylee Yankow, an All-Region defensive standout who caused 35 turnovers, and Brielle Crowell, a second-team WVC all-star midfielder.
Gia Caporuscio and Jackie Gallagher, a pair of WVC first-team all-stars, lead Crestwood. Last season, Crestwood also qualified for the state playoffs and reached the quarterfinals.
Scranton Prep is led by WVC second-team midfielder McKenna Toolan, and North Pocono, which reached the District 2 Class 2A semifinals last season, returns Aniyah Brago-Jackson, a WVC second-team all-star.
Wallenpaupack is a new varsity team making its debut, but is ineligible for the WVC championship. The Lady Buckhorns have 25 players on the roster.
Boys
Abington Heights has an experienced group and is expected to contend for the WVC championship.
Gavin Anders, who is committed to McDaniel College, is a three-time All-Region selection. Last season, he had 53 goals and 24 assists.
Abington Heights also returns three WVC second-team all-stars. Gavin Lindsay has scored 66 goals and has 31 assists in his career. Logan Bohn was a second-team defender, and Colton Nahalnik was named to the All-Region team as a goalie after stopping 191 shots at a 62.2% clip.
Delaware Valley, which is under the guidance of first-year head coach Dan Gonzalez, must replace a lot of its offensive firepower from last season.
The Warriors do return All-Region defender Justin Estevez and Shaun Cannalley and Jaxon Barbalich, who were both WVC Coaches’ second-team selections.
Scranton Prep, which lost in the District 2 Class 2A final to Crestwood, returns All-Region players Mackey Lynett, who had 47 goals and 36 assists, and Braedon McPartland, who had 45 goals and 28 assists.
The Cavaliers also welcome back Will McPartland, who missed all of last season with an ACL injury suffered in football season. The Fairfield commit is one of the top all-around athletes in the state and had 55 goals and 29 assists in his first two seasons.
