Scranton High School is searching for a head football coach for the second time this year.
Ray Dayton, who was recently hired to succeed Steve Shumbres as the Knights’ coach, is returning to the Lackawanna College coaching staff as the team’s offensive coordinator and offensive line coach under first-year head coach Mark Ross, according to a press release issued by the college Monday.
In February, the Scranton School District appointed Dayton as the head coach for the Knights. Shumbres resigned following the 2025 season. He had a career record of 33-50 in eight seasons.
Efforts to reach officials from Scranton High School were unsuccessful Tuesday.
Dayton spent four seasons as Lackawanna College’s offensive coordinator. Lackawanna College’s 2023 team averaged 452.8 total yards per game, and in 2024, the unit averaged nearly 40 points per game. Last season, the Falcons averaged 32.1 points per game and 393.6 total yards per game.
As part of Lackawanna College’s announcement ahead of the start of spring camp, former Susquehanna head coach and Valley View assistant Joe Zabielski will be the defensive line coach for the Falcons. A former all-state player at Old Forge and standout at Bucknell University, Zabielski spent three seasons with Coach Ross at Misericordia.
Will Blanden was named Lackawanna College’s defensive coordinator. He spent the last five seasons at Cornell University. Former Lackawanna College offensive lineman Nick Csillan is the tight ends coach. Longtime coach Paul Wiedlich will return as the linebackers coach. It will be the former GAR head coach’s sixth season with the Falcons. Josh Pardini will be the quarterbacks coach. Kevin Roginski will enter his fifth season with the Falcons and will coach the running backs. Former Lackawanna standout Mike McGrue will be the defensive backs coach, and Anthony Staivecki will coach the wide receivers.
There will also be new high school football coaches in 2026 at Western Wayne, Riverside and Montrose.
Dave Shimkosky will guide Western Wayne, Jim Phillips is taking over at Riverside, and Brett Stage is the new coach at Montrose, which will return to competing as a member of the Lackawanna Football Conference after being independent for four seasons.
