(WHTM)– Finding the perfect outfit for prom can be a burden on students’ and families’ wallets, and one Pennsylvania lawmaker is looking to change that.

A Pennsylvania lawmaker is proposing a sales tax holiday for prom-related items. Whether it’s a dress or a suit, State Rep. Maria Brown (R-9) thinks that every young person deserves to wear the outfit they deserve.

The legislation would establish a sales tax holiday for these items, a period when selected goods are exempt from state sales taxes, according to the Tax Foundation.

Targeted items with a sales tax holiday often include back-to-school supplies, clothing, computers, and hurricane preparedness supplies.

“This could make the difference between a young lady getting the dress of her dreams and not, or a young man being able to afford his first suit that fits properly,” State Rep. Brown said. “But most of all it will make an important right of passage in high school just a little bit more affordable for families across the state.”

The bill has not yet been submitted for introduction.
