ALLENTOWN, Pa. – A Dieruff High School athletic trainer is being credited with saving a man’s life after a field umpire collapsed during a softball game at Patriots Park on Wednesday night.
Dieruff was playing a softball game against Allentown Central Catholic when the field umpire suffered from a heart attack, according to the Allentown Fire Department.
Local Sate Sen. Nick Miller identified the umpire as Mark Weil. After Weil became unconscious and collapsed, Dieruff athletic trainer Danielle Vogt jumped in and performed CPR, according to officials. Vogt is employed by the St. Luke’s University Health Network.
The swift response of the athletic trainer and coaches Brianna Knipe and Jeff Appleman on scene helped stabilize the situation until emergency responders arrived, the fire department said.
Weil regained consciousness after being treated by emergency responders and was transported to a local hospital for evaluation, authorities said.
