PHILADELPHIA, PA — A Secret Service agent escorting former First Lady Jill Biden shot himself at Philadelphia International Airport on Friday, federal officials confirmed.
No one else was injured in the incident, the Secret Service said in a brief statement confirming the incident. Jill Biden was not near the agent at the time of the incident.
Officials described the incident as a “negligent discharge while handling a service weapon.”
The agent’s injuries are not life-threatening. CNN and ABC report the gunshot hit his leg.
It’s not clear exactly where at the airport the incident occurred.
“There was no impact to the protectee’s movement and they were not present at the time of the incident,” the Secret Service added.
Biden, a native of Montgomery County, was in Harrisburg on Thursday for a panel event on the contributions of women in public service.
This is a breaking story. More details will be provided as they become available.
